Magnetic field amplification and magnetically supported explosions of collapsing, non-rotating stellar cores

We study the amplification of magnetic fields in the collapse and the post-bounce evolution of the core of a non-rotating star of 15 solar masses in axisymmetry. To this end, we solve the coupled equations of magnetohydrodynamics and neutrino transport in the two-moment approximation. The pre-collapse magnetic field is strongly amplified by compression in the infall. Initial fields of the order of 1010 G translate into proto-neutron star fields similar to the ones observed in pulsars, while stronger initial fields yield magnetar-like final field strengths. Effect of packing on the cluster nature of C nanotubes: An information entropy analysis

The possibility of the existence of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in organic solvents in the form of clusters is discussed. A theory is developed based on a bundlet model for clusters, which enables describing the distribution function of clusters by size. Comparison of the calculated values of solubility with experiments would permit obtaining energetic parameters characterizing the interaction of an SWNT with its surrounding, in a solid or solution. Coherence absorption and condensation induced by thermalization of incoherent nonlinear fields

We show that a conservative system of incoherent nonlinear waves exhibits, as a rule, an irreversible process of coherence transfer, in which the incoherence of the system is absorbed by the small-amplitude field, thus allowing the high-amplitude field to evolve towards a highly condensed coherent state. This process of coherence absorption results from the natural thermalization of the fields to a thermodynamic equilibrium state. The theory reveals that, contrary to a classical gas system, a wave system does not satisfy an equipartition of energy among the particles. Relativistic MHD simulations of extragalactic jets

We have performed a comprehensive parameter study of the morphology and dynamics of axisymmetric, magnetized, relativistic jets by means of numerical simulations. The simulations have been performed with an upgraded version of the GENESIS code which is based on a second-order accurate finite volume method involving an approximate Riemann solver suitable for relativistic ideal magnetohydrodynamic flows, and a method of lines. Starting from pure hydrodynamic models we consider the effect of a magnetic field of increasing strength (up to β ≡ |b|2/2p ≈ 3.3 times the equipartition value) and different topology (purely toroidal or poloidal). Local simulations of the magnetized Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in neutron-star mergers

Context. Global MHD simulations show Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instabilities at the contact surface of two merging neutron stars. That region has been identified as the site of efficient amplification of magnetic fields. However, these global simulations, due to numerical limitations, were unable to determine the saturation level of the field strength, and thus the possible back-reaction of the magnetic field onto the flow. Aims. We investigate the amplification of initially weak fields in KH unstable shear flows, and the back-reaction of the field onto the flow. Methods. Effective temperature and scaling laws of polarized quantum vortex bundles

Abstract An effective non-equilibrium temperature is defined for (locally) polarized and dense turbulent superfluid vortex bundles, related to the average energy of the excitations (Kelvin waves) of vortex lines. In the quadratic approximation of the excitation energy in terms of the wave amplitude A, a previously known scaling relation between amplitude and wavelength k of Kelvin waves in polarized bundles, namely A ∝ k − 1 / 2 , follows from the homogeneity of the effective temperature. This result is analogous to that of the well-known equipartition result in equilibrium systems.

Periodic Classification of Local Anaesthetics (Procaine Analogues)

Algorithms for classification are proposed based on criteria (information entropyand its production). The feasibility of replacing a given anaesthetic by similar ones in thecomposition of a complex drug is studied. Some local anaesthetics currently in use areclassified using characteristic chemical properties of different portions of their molecules.Many classification algorithms are based on information entropy. Thermalization and condensation in an incoherently pumped passive optical cavity

International audience; We study theoretically and numerically the condensation and the thermalization of classical optical waves in an incoherently pumped passive Kerr cavity. We show that the dynamics of the cavity exhibits a turbulent behavior that can be described by the wave turbulence theory. A mean-field kinetic equation is derived, which reveals that, in its high finesse regime, the cavity behaves essentially as a conservative Hamiltonian system. In particular, the intracavity turbulent field is shown to relax adiabatically toward a thermodynamic equilibrium state of energy equipartition.
